Traumatic Brain Injury

What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

1.7 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. What many people don’t know is that this figure is actually much higher because it doesn’t account for those who hit their head and don’t seek treatment. Many can experience a brain injury and not even know it. A brain injury can occur even with a very slight concussion or with just a very hard hit on the head. Lesions can also be too small to be picked up on an fMRI. Sometimes, you can be cleared of an injury and yet still suffer from cognitive decline and emotional problems. Advanced Psychotherapeutics of Lynchburg and Central Virginia offers the most comprehensive treatment around for brain injury (TBI) that include the use of non-invasive brain stimulation and neurofeedback training. Such treatments have been shown to restore degrees of functionality. If you’ve suffered from a brain injury or think you may have, call Advanced Psychotherapeutics of Lynchburg and Central Virginia to see how we can help you.

How do I know if I have Traumatic Brain Injury?

The obvious is if you’ve experienced a concussion or multiple concussions and as a result have been experiencing changes in mood, irritability, and problems with cognition. These are common signs of brain injury. Outside of experiencing a concussion, if you’ve been exposed to chronic blows to the head and as a result have experienced difficulty with cognition and mood, you may have a mild brain injury.

How is Traumatic Brain Injury treated?

The most common method of treatment in brain injury is with the emotional and/or behavior symptoms using medication and occupational therapy. However, research is clear that depending on the severity of the brain injury, functioning can be either restored or at least made better. This can only be done by directly working with the brain using non-invasive brain stimulation techniques or neurofeedback. These modalities increase activity in the brain at the site of the brain injury, thus improving functioning. These treatments are non-invasive without side effects. These modalities can also be done in conjunction with occupational therapy and will improve overall results.

Can Traumatic Brain Injury be cured?

This depends on the severity of the brain injury and location of the brain injury. With the use of our researched based protocols, we’ve been able to improve functioning. In some cases, we’ve been able to reverse the effects of brain injury and increase functioning as much as two standard deviations from base line tests.
